Artist Statement

Alexandra Rosa Koskinen (b1999) is a Finnish Peruvian artist currently based in Helsinki. She has a Master’s in Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art Theory (VICCA) from Aalto University from 2024 and a Bachelors (hons) Degree in Fine Arts, Painting from The University University of the Arts London (UAL).

Through her practice Koskinen seeks to use the human form as a means to process the strangeness and absurdity of the collective human experience. Embedded with themes of morality, memory and (cultural) identity, she explores the edges of what we define as a shared consciousness and subconscious through distortions and surreal transformations of my subjects in the hopes of achieving emotional resonance and above all encouraging self reflection. Koskinen works primarily with oil paint and relies heavily on text based work as a foundation for her images. The recollection, resurfacing and redesign of these narratives is key to her practice.
