A number of small and short video works, photography and process images from the proverb and domestic collections. The performances are characterized by their playful and instinctual nature, focusing on limited movement, primary colours and themes of surrealism and the absurd. Some of the main influences of this body of work include Bauhaus performance art, and works by renowned artists like Laurie Simmons and Bruce Neuman.

While my work "Pins and Needles" pays homage to Nauman's "Feet of Clay", I use the familiar imagery to highlight other aspects of the biblical narrative, ironically by using the very same technique Nauman uses for his photography. The feet of clay still stand for hidden flaws, or undesirable characteristics, whether these be mental or corporeal. Unlike Nauman's work the clay is shaped to closer mimic the appearance of the foot, making the additions of the pins and needles more uncomfortable for the viewer to experience, mirroring the physical and psychological discomfort of the actual condition. Pins and needles are commonly caused by the lack of blood circulation to the extremities making these numb. The sensation of tingling is the body's response to the return of the feeling. However pins and needles, are also common to people such as myself prone to anxiety, panic attacks and hyperventilation. The saying "to be on pins and needles" refers to being nervous, impatient or anxious.

The red of the feet acts in direct reference to my previous work If It Wasn't Attached To You... standing for the flaw, the trauma in the form of Oedipus' pierced ankles, the attempt to overlook it and hide it with clay, which soon becomes numb, only for the pins and needles to kick in and become painful.

Video

'Milk' is the main performance video in this collection as well as the only work in which I show a figure’s face, and the only male subject I have had thus far. In this short performance the lamp shades only "come alive" and move comfortably around the domestic space when the man exits. The motif of the milk was inspired by a scene in the 1971 film ‘A Clockwork Orange’ in which the main character Alex and his crew are seen drinking milk surrounded by mannequins placed in sexual or provocative position around them. This duality between our typical associations of milk with innocence and motherhood clash with the picture of these men, who go on to commit some of the most disturbing and unforgivable transgression against women through the entirety of the film. The saturation of colours such as red, blue green and yellow enhances the whiteness of the milk and the man’s clothes. The lamp figure on the right wearing all red portrays another aspect of the female experience, juxtaposing the idea of menstruation (womanhood, loss of innocence) with the purity and cleanliness of the white milk. In addition the movements and gestures in this performance are calculated to mirror that of Bauhaus Performance Art in their geometrical actions and symmetry, while also giving the performers a chance to act according to their own instincts when they sit on the sofa. The aim of this video is to enhance the objectification of women in men dominated spaces. One cannot see the lamp shade before the man leaves, raising the question of an unreliable narrator and the ongoing presence of the male gaze perspective, making us ask where these figures originally women? Are they objectifying themselves in order to hide, and stay safe within this space?
